strength. >> gratitude, expression and prayer. >> very happy to hear that he is not going away from this and that he is going to be in prayer. i was moved to hear those words from him. >> i was very grateful y. have seen the pope before. now i am grateful to see the pope for the last time for now. >> reporter: this very joyous event played out against background of news scandal. headlines about priests accusing scottish cardinals of inappropriate behavior going back some 30 years. those priests and the former priests want cardinal o'brien to resign immediately before he comes here to vote for the new pope. a papal spokesperson says the pope will be informed about the matter and the vatican will issue a statement tomorrow morning.

pope benedict will make his last public appearance as pontiff on monday before retiring on thursday. california cardinal roger mahoney was questioned under oath this weekend about his handling of a sexual abuse case in the 1980s. the deposition involved a case where an ex priest is expected of molesting as many as 28 children. after the deposition cardinal mahoney is scheduled to fly to italy to vote for the next pope. catholic activists turned in 10,000 signatures urging mahoney to recuse himself from the vote but he tweeted that he would be leaving for rome in a few hours. the brother of south african olympian and accused killer, oscar pistorius is also facing a charge of homicide.

the athlete's brother, carl, faces a culpable homicide charge over a 2008 road death. a woman on a motorcycle was killed in the crash. >> the thing with road accidents is always a tough thing and it is also involved with the family. not good. >> the statement from the family said he deeply regrets the accident and blood tests prove he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time. oscar pistorius is charged with murdering his girlfriend and is free on bail. members of congress have until thursday to work out a spending compromise. if they don't automatic spending cuts are scheduled to kick in on friday. so far there is no sign of movement in the stalemate over tax increases favored by president obama and rejected by republicans. the white house is warning that

government employee furloughs will hurt about everyone. governors from both sides who were gathered in d.c. for meetings today continue to point fingers. >> nobody is saying he should make these cuts but we can cut less than 3% without jeopardizing meat inspections. >> watt we have seen is more of the same. the congressional republicans move the goal post as soon as the president comes their way. he has a plan on the table that has a lot of things on the table they say they support. >> even if congress can't compromise big cuts are likely on the way. former president jimmy carter was in san francisco today addressing thousands at a meeting at the commonwealth club. it was at the war memorial building. mr. carter spoke about the challenges and responsibilities facing the united states as a world super power and said the characterization of a great nation includes justice, peace,

on the show sent the flames shooting up a flew. police were able to alert everyone to evacuate. a total of eight apartments were left uninhabitable. most are staying with friends and relatives but the red cross is providing aid. in palo alto police are looking for a man who reported lee tried to rob another man at gun point. police say it happened at 8:30 right outside the webster parking garage. he the would-be robber road up on a by sickleal, pulled out a gun and demanded cash. he managed to safely run away. three other armed robberies have happened in palo alto in recent weeks and police are investigating. friends and family of an east bay couple expressing their concerns after the two vanished. danica patrick did not win the daytona 500 obut she did

the families of a bay area couple missing in peru are trying to do everything they can to find their loved ones. the man and woman were last seen in peru almost a month ago. and nbc bay area is reporting. >> reporter: the family is trying to coordinate search efforts with authorities in peru and are obviously frustrated being thousands of miles away from where the two were last seen. they both left the bay area in november for a five month cycling adventure through south america. the facebook posts ended on january 25. at that point the couple was in peru, a day later a bus security camera in lima captured images

of the two getting off the bus and into a taxi. >> i am extremely concerned. i am very fearful that something bad hat happened. it's not likely that they're just out on an excursion away from internet access. they had been using the internet and skype and facebook to stay in contact and that contact has ceased. >> reporter: the owner of the peddler bike shop where neil worked for the past two years says everyone who knows the couple is worried especially since the state department issued a travel warning about members of an organization looking to kidnap american tourists. they have not made any financial transactions this january. we hope to learn more aboutwit the search. >> thanks for the update.

weather. you might notice a few of the high clouds coming by as high pressure temporarily gets dented by the weather system. it is not going to clear the way. we will see more clouds briefly. wednesday, thursday, friday the high will build back across northern california and give us a slight offshore wind pattern. for the bay area especially friday into next weekend inland valleys seeing 70s. this should be the first day of march. as we go into next weekend we will see 70s inland and temperatures staying mild. tomorrow morning maybe a few sprinkles or stray showers. after that mostly sunny skies and high clouds drifting through to go into tuesday. wednesday will probably get gusty winds in the hills as high pressure builds in and sets the stage for that warmup. very dry looking future cast there taking us through the middle part of the week. tonight more clouds.

low i had a feeling i was going to get freight trained. on to baseball where the san francisco chronicle is reporting that giants team president is working on a multi year extension with both manager bruce bochy and gm sabe yn. both are signed through 2014. the giants were on the diamond this afternoon. lost a close game to the cubs. bruce bochy used eight pitches today. all four runs against matt cain. cain was hit in the right knee but says he is okay. giants will face white sox tomorrow. what about the green and gold? the oakland as taking on the angels. crisp on first. chris young with a double. chris comes around to score. you know he has mad speed.

bottom of the first. chris young makes a diving catch to rob. young would leave the game afterwards for precautionary reasons. it was a quadcramp. he is okay, as well. as go on to win. the golden state warriors won 100-99 against the minnesota timber wolves. reportedly alex smith, the quarterback for the 49ers, has been traded to the kansas city chiefs according to a report. that trade cannot be finalized until march 12. we will keep you updated on that information coming into our news room as we speak. >> what did the niners get? >> that we don't know. we don't know exactly what they got whether it is draft picks or what. at this point we are hearing they were traded. we will have an update on that possible trade. >> thanks a lot.
